The saying "The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence" gets a lot of play and its totally true though I prefer the one I coined just last night with the help of my 3 year old and some of her visiting friends "Whats the best toy in the world? Someone else's".
Here is America land we pine desperately, or at least I do, for some of the more rugged diesel powered small trucks that the rest of the world enjoys; Great mileage, more utility, indestructible. But what about other countries where these trucks are the tops dogs, and no full size market really exists? I stumbled upon a video today from Australia that illustrates the idea that sometimes the thing you want most, is just the things you can't have.
The Hilux SR5 is a top trim "one tonne" truck in Australia and despite having less electronic aids than a 10 year old Hyundai (they are just now getting traction control and bluetooth?) is still lust worthy so how would it compare to the burly (but arguably weakest full size competitor) and thirsty Tundra? well...It depends on how much I need the space and how much discount I can get the Tundra for, it may be cheaper. What if said tundra was $112,000 after conversion to right hand drive? You would think there wouldn't be any takers at that price but, as the saying goes, sometimes the other side of the fence is too tempting to resist at any price.

I think part of the draw of the Hilux is the fact it's forbidden fruit. I really like my Tacoma and if it had the diesel, I don't know if I'd prefer the Hilux to it. A stop to Diesel Toys in SA is in the future.
The price for the highest trim of Hilux is hard to stomach. I appreciate the accurate measurement of grunts in this video."Shit loads" is the correct unit.

I always have the thought in the back of my head whenever I see something like this …
… of "how do they do that in Europe (or elsewhere) ?"
I realize everyone doesn't need 800lbft of torque, but you certainly do see enough people hauling big loads.

Short answer:
They don't do this in Europe, you need a much more difficult to get commercial license to haul much fewer lbs over there and its super expensive to get insurance at that point. It can be done, but its pretty rare.

I know they have a thing with vans, but I didn't realize the whole commercial license thing. Obviously that is a lot different than any schmuck being able to drive a big ass pick up.
